Check with some place like Farco plastics, they have sheets of plastic that would be suitable for the job, it will be more expensive but you will only have to do it once, if you do it with ply make sure to figure in the costs of the resin, brushes ect so you are comparing apples to apples.

Re: Plywood substitute You're probably thinking of "Starboard", which (I think) is the brand name of the material ondarvr mentioned. It's a plastic composite and heavy compared to plywood.
