Engineered Wood Flooring: Laminate Flooring: Composition: Engineered wood flooring is made of high-quality plywood with a veneer of pre-finished fine hardwood on top. Laminate flooring is made of thin, pressed wood board with an image of wood on top covered by a clear wear layer to protect the image. Below is an attached or separate foam underlayment.
ENGINEERED TIMBER FLOORING. An engineered board is, quite simply, a timber board which consists of more than one layer. By placing each layer so that the grain runs perpendicularly it becomes virtually impossible for the timber to swell or shrink with changes in humidity and so it dramatically increases its stability.
Shaw Engineered Hardwood Flooring Shaw's Engineered hardwood core is made up of multiple layers of wood stacked in a cross-grain configuration which minimizes expanding and shrinking. Like EPIC Plus Engineered hardwood, Shaw Engineered can be installed above, on, or below grade.
An engineered flooring construction which is popular in parts of Europe is the hardwood lamella, softwood core laid perpendicular to the lamella, and a final backing layer of the same noble wood used for the lamella.
Engineered wood flooring has the advantage over solid wood that its stable structure means that it is much more resistant to expansion and contraction than solid wood. What this means is that it can safely be fitted in rooms where temperature and moisture fluctuations are significant, like bathrooms and kitchens.
